Point-of-Care (POC) Manufacturing in Hospitals
One of the biggest shifts in 2026 is the rise of Point-of-Care (POC) manufacturing. Major medical centers now host in-house 3D printing labs where clinicians and engineers work side-by-side. Instead of waiting weeks for a device from a centralized factory, a surgeon can request a customized guide or model and have it sterilized and ready for the operating room in under 24 hours.
This decentralized model significantly improves the agility of trauma centers. However, it also presents a regulatory challenge: hospitals must now act as "mini-manufacturers," maintaining the same strict quality controls and document trails as traditional medical device companies.
